Colombo's new landmark Lotus Tower, placed on the waterfront of Beira Lake in the heart of the capital, was opened 16th September by Sri Lanka's President Sirisena. Though designed for broadcasting in the first place, but it also serves as an observation platform and therefore is a new touristic highlight of Colombo. Measuring 356 m (1,168 ft) in height, it is one of the 20 tallest towers in the world.
Regrettably, a fatal incident occured at Crocodile Rock near the beach of Elephant Rock to the south of Arugam Bay. A 24 year old British journalist has died after being attacked by a crocodile. Eyewitnesses saw the attack, when the man washed his hand in the water. Local fishermen running to the spot were not able to help any more. After the young man's leg had been caught by the crocodile, he was dragged into the water and probably drowned. But the cause of the death is not yet confirmed. Sri Lankan Navy divers found the body in the lagoon yesterday.
The lake of Crocodile Rock is famous for a large amount of the namegiving muggers inhabiting it. Attacks on fishermen occured three times at this lagoon, but without fatal consequences.
To our knowledge, this tragical incident is Sri Lanka's first case of a foreign guest's death caused by an attack of wild animals. Please correct us in your comments, if this assumption should be wrong.
