Among the long coastlines of the island of Sri Lanka, the deep south between Galle Harbour in the west Yala National Park in the east is the area which offers by far the largest choice of coves and crescent beaches, which are not only scenic locations but allow for safe swimming in the sea. To name just a few, Unawatuna is protected by a small coral reef, Weligama by a chain of islets, the area of Dickwella and Tangalle is rich in very small and narrow coves. Accordingly, individual accommodation and boutique hotels are abundant on the south coast.
Dondra Head, the southernmost point of mainland Sri Lanka, roughly marks the transition zone between monsoon and anti-monsoon climate zones and seasons. This is to say, that resorts further east, paticularly Tangalle, Hambantota and Kirinda, have much less precipitation than the monsoon region in the southwest and are driest between July and September.
The so-called Deep South of Sri Lanka is also blessed with cultural heritage from various periods. Not surprisingly, most findings from pre-colonial far-distance trade between China and the Mediterraneans are found in the Southern Province. Mulkirigala in the hinterland of Dickwella is one of the finest painted cave temples from the Kandyan period. Last not least, two of the most beloved national parks are in the Deep South, too, namely Udawalawe for elephants and Yala for leopards, both situated within day-trip distance from most of the southern beach resorts. The inland expressway from Colombo to Hambantota makes it easy to reach the airport and other locations quickly and comfortably.
