Hunas Falls is the name of both a hotel run by Amaya and the waterfalls in its gardens. The 48 m high waterfalls are unique in Sri Lanka, as they are man-made. They are part of a landscape garden and are created by diverting a natural stream aritficially to the natural cliff.
Twentyfive kilometers (16 miles) northeast of Kandy, in the northeastern part of Sri Lanka’s highlands, lies the mountain village of Elkaduwa. It’ situated at the western foothills of Hunnasgiriya Mountain. This isolated mountain west of the Knuckles Range includes the Campbell Lane Forest. (The Hunnasgiriya Mountain west of the Knuckles Range should not be confused with the village of Hunnasgiriya south of the Knuckles Range.)
Elkaduwa is best known for a hotel located outside the village, situated at an elevation of about 950 meters, featuring a unique waterfall, Hunas Falls, after which the hotel is named. Due to traffic congestion occuring in Kandy frequently and also due to the challenging mountain road, reaching Hunas Falls Hotel can take up to an hour. Therefore, the comfortable hotel has its own helicopter landing pad for wealthy guests who have to spare time. Hunas Falls is Sri Lanka's most famous honeymoon hotel.
Due to its elevation, with daytime temperatures only slightly above 20 degrees Celsius (70 degree Fahrenheit), Hunas Falls is a pleasantly cool retreat. Nighttime temperatures can drop to around 10 degrees Celsius (50 Degree Fahrenheit). The atmosphere of this location is renowned for morning mists as well as spectacular sunsets. However, with over 4000mm of annual rainfall, this is also one of the rainiest places in Sri Lanka.
The waterfalls within the hotel grounds, named Hunas Falls, cascade 60 meters down a steep rock face into a dammed pond. What’s special about the waterfalls is that they are artificially created as part of the extensive manicured park of the hotel.
Hunas Falls primarily offers one of the few well-explored hiking areas in the tropical island. Jungle sections alternate with open spaces providing excellent viewpoints and tea plantations. The local plantation produces the highest quality tea in the otherwise not so renowned tea-growing region of Kandy. The highest peak in this region, as mentioned above, is Hunasgiriya Peak at an elevation of 1,510 m (4,954 feet).
