The Bhadravathi Temple at the Mulgama Road (Delpitiya Road) between Galaha and Pupuressa in the Deltota Division, though almost never mentioned in guide books, has one of the most scenic stupas in Sri Lanka, as its white dome is placed atop the dark surface of granite hill, which can be seen from far away. Though belonging to the main range of the central highlands of Sri Lanka, the prominent hill of Bhadravati stands somewhat isolated near the trench between the Hanthana Mountains to the north and the long chain of mountains of Kondagala, Chariot Path, and Piduratalagala to the south. The small town of Galaha is situated at the bottom of the valley in this trench. Besides Meemure, this is one of the few regions on the island, where step cultivation of paddy has a long tradition. As a result of a reforestation programme, the mountains in this area have more pine trees than other montane forests.
The car park of the Bhadravathi Temple is only in 200 m distance from the B125 road to Pupuressa. Here at the foot of the mountain is the group of buildings that form the monastery, which administrationally belongs to the Kandy-based Asgiriya branch of the Syam Nikaya. In recent years it has been developed into a state-run hospital for sick and aged monks with more than of dozens of well-equipped rooms. This National Infirmary for Buddhist Bhikkus, also called House for Old Bikkhus locally, was initiated under President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his health minister (who later became his successor) Maithripala Sirisena.
The car park of the monastery is at an elevation of 1026 m above sea level. A long flight of stairs leads to the top of the hill which is crowned by a new stupa and a modern Buddha sculpture. As the hill raises 1156 m (3800 feet) above sea level, the stairway has to overcome a height altitude of 130 m (430 feet). The efforts are rewarded by the breathtaking views to the surrounding tea plantations and, in a distance, the Hanthana Mountain Range to the south and the upper Mahaweli River to the west. Like at many other large stupas constructed in Sri Lanka in recent decades, the white dome contains a large accessible room with a smaller second stupa in the center, which can be circumambulated under the vault of the larger dome.
Bhadravati is located 3 km (2 miles) south of Galaha and altogether 22 km (7 miles) south of Kandy via Hanthana by road. Driving distance to Gampola is 22 km, too.
