Jodu Ella translates to Twin Falls or Double Waterfalls. And that is what can be seen here, two parallel horsetail falls dropping from the same cliff. The somewhat iconic view of Jodu Ella can literally be seen in the hands of each and every Sri Lankan as well as each and every foreign guest, because Jodu Ella is depicted on the 100 Rupees note of Sri Lanka.
The twin falls of Jodu Ella Falls are also known as Bambarella Knuckles Falls. They are formed by the Moragaha River, a tributary of the Huluganga River, which forms the valley at the western foot of Knuckles Range. Both horsetail falls are 45 m (159 feet) tall.
The immediate surroundings of the Jodu Falls is rich in medical herbs and reptiles and amphibians. A small path leads from the nearest car park to the foot of the waterfalls, which is an idyllic picnic spot, popular with locals, but less visited by foreign travelers.
Jodu Ella is located in less than one kilomter distance from the village of Gomara, which is one of the best starting points for hiking and trekking in Knuckles Range. Driving distance from Kandy is 36 km (22 miles).
