Train crossing Nine Arches Bridge

Train crossing Nine Arches Bridge
Nine Arches Bridge is a beloved photo scene near Ella in the southern part of Sri Lanka's highlands. The observation terraces to view trains crossing the pituresque bridge can easily be reached from "Green Tea" plantation and factory, which is at the B113 road to Namunukula and Passara. The vantage point known as "Little Adam's Peak" isn't far away from here, either.

Lanka Excursions Holidays round tours try best to arrive at Nine Arches Bridge just in time to see one of the daily trains crossing it.

Piduruthalagala mountain behind the city of Nuwara Eliya
The highest mountain of Sri Lanka was known as Mount Pedro to the British, they abbreviated the original Sinhala name Piduru to that of the Christian saint Pedro. "Piduru" means "straw", referring to the grasslands on the flattened summit. The entire local name of the mountain, Piduruthalagala, translates to "straw plateau rock", "thala" is a Sinhala word known from several toponyms sucg "Mihinthala" or "Haputhala", whereas "gala" for "rock" or "hill" is even more common in the names of Sri Lankan locations.

Piduruthalagala, located just 10 km northeast of Nuwara Eliya, reaches an altitude of 2,524m or 8,281ft. The summit is not open to the public, as it is home to a a communications array and radar of the Sri Lankan army.

Mini World's End in Knuckles Range

Mini World's End in Knuckles Range
Most Sri Lanka travellers who like hiking of course know Big World’s End and Mini World’s End. Both of them are spectacular escarpments at Horton Plains in the south of the central highlands. But there are more escarpments called „World’s End“ on the island. The most noteworthy of them is Mini World’s End in the Knuckles Range in the northeastern part of the highlands, which is locally better known by ist traditional Sinhala name Dumbara Kanduvetiya, which translates to „misty range“. It's near the hamlet of Deanston, located at the Dotalugala Mountain not far from Hunnasgiriya. Deanston is home of the Knuckles Conservation Centre, which is the starting point of a short and easy hiking trail to Mini World’s End. Despite ot’s nickname „mini“, the vantage point is quite spectacular, with a 270 degree panoramic view. The best time to visit it is the late afternoon. Mini World’s End is rarely visited by foreign tourists and still not crowded, although the entire region between Hunnasgiriya and Meemure is one of the most scenic parts of Sri Lanka.

hinking on Horton Plains
Horton Plains is one of Sri Lanka’s best hiking areas, it’s the island nation‘s only national park which allows walking freely without ranger and also the only one situated in the highlands. Highlights for hikers are the montane cloud forest with interspersed open grassland areas and the vantage points at the edge of the plateau, which are known as „World’s End“. It’s also one of the best places for birdwatching in Sri Lanka’s central highlands. Our website proudly presents one of the most comprehensive descriptions of Horton Plains you will find anywhere online...

St. Clair's Falls in Sri Lanka's central highlands

3/3/2018

St. Clair's Falls in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is the land of waterfalls due to their high number or density. However, most of the waterfalls are formed by streams and are horsetail falls. The widest waterfalls formed by a large river were Victoria Falls to the east of Kandy, but they disappeared after the constrution of the Victoria Dam. The widest falls now occuring in Sri Lanka are St. Clair’s Falls in the Dimbula tea region. They can be seen from the highland railroad as well as from the road when travelling from Hatton to Nuwara Eliya. They have less water than in previous years, because the river was dammed further upstream, but they are still impressive and deserve their nickname „Little Niagara of Sri Lanka“. Devon Falls are not far away from St.Clair’s Falls.

Nine Arches Bridge between Ella and Demodara

Nine Arches Bridge between Ella and Demodara
Situated at an elevation of 950 m above sea level, Nine Arches Bridge at Gotuwala near Demodara in the Uva highlands has become a popular hiking destination for holiday makers who stay in the nearby hill resort of Ella. Another English nickname of and  viaduct ist ‚bridge in the sky‘. The Sinhalese name however translates to ‚Nine Skies Bridge‘, referring to the visual effect that one can see the sky nine times through the arches when standing below the bridge. Ten trains cross Nine Arches Bridge daily. Cafes with vantage points can be visited on either side of the bridge.

With a height of 24.5 m and a total length of 91.4 m, this viaduct built during the British Colonial period and commsioned in 1921 is still the largest railway bridge in Sri Lanka. This massive bridge is built entirely of solid rocks, stone, bricks and cement. There is not used any steel for ist construction. One popular story explains this by claiming that when construction work was already started, World War I broke-out and that steel assigned for the viaduct was required for other projects. The construction work came to a halt. Hence the locals decided to build the viaduct in a different way without a single element of steel.
P.K. AppuhamiP.K. Appuhami, Sinhalese co-engineer of Nine Arches Bridge
P.K. Appuhami, born in 1870, had been popular drummer and dancer. When he lost a competition during a devil dance ceremony, he returned home in his traditional devil costume. The British construction workers at the brisge seeing him got frightened, but later on hired him as a labourer, who in the course of time turned out to be a talented engineer. Apuhami asked the British to hand over the difficult task of anchoring the bridge piers at the bottom of the boggy bottom. After being rejected for this task, Apuhami finally was entrusted with this engineering work. Starting in 1923, Apuhami mangaed to completed this work within a year. But the cost of the construction had turned out to be so low that the British railway enginieers doubted the structural integrity of the construction. Appuhami then lied down under one of the arches when the first train crossed the newly erected viaduct, as a prrof of trust in his engineering work.
