Regrettably, a fatal incident occured at Crocodile Rock near the beach of Elephant Rock to the south of Arugam Bay. A 24 year old British journalist has died after being attacked by a crocodile. Eyewitnesses saw the attack, when the man washed his hand in the water. Local fishermen running to the spot were not able to help any more. After the young man's leg had been caught by the crocodile, he was dragged into the water and probably drowned. But the cause of the death is not yet confirmed. Sri Lankan Navy divers found the body in the lagoon yesterday.
The lake of Crocodile Rock is famous for a large amount of the namegiving muggers inhabiting it. Attacks on fishermen occured three times at this lagoon, but without fatal consequences. To our knowledge, this tragical incident is Sri Lanka's first case of a foreign guest's death caused by an attack of wild animals. Please correct us in your comments, if this assumption should be wrong.
