Hiriketiya Beach, situated between the municipalities of Dickwella and Nilwella, is somewhat like Sri Lanka's picturebook crescent-shaped sandy beach framed by palm groves. Actually, it's more horsehoe-shaped than only crescent. Hiriketiya Bay is still a little bit a hidden gem at Sri Lanka's south coast, as it is one of the few beaches that is in some distance from the otherwise quite noisy A2 coastal road and not crowded with hotel buildings.
In recent years, it has attracted surfers in particular. Besides Arugam Bay, Hikkaduwa and Weligama/Mirissa it has earned the reputation of being one of the island's best surf spots, due to a left reef and beach surf break. The left point break on the reef can reach 6 feet in height and allowing a 350 m ride. The surf break is said to be available almost ten months of the year. The break within the protected beach is perfect for beginners during the peak season from December to February. Surf schools are available, Saranga can be your surfing instructor at Hiriketiya Beach.
