A power struggle between the president and the prime minister of Sri Lanka, who once were allies against former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, has resulted in the firing of the prime minister. Replacing him, the president appointed the said former President Rajapaksa new prime minister. Though Rajapaksa's new party won this year's regional elections overwhelmingly, he has not yet a majority in the parliament. That's why the president also dissolved the country’s parliament for three weeks. The ousted prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, refuses to cede power. He remains ensconced in the prime ministerial residence in Colombo, thereby deepening the crisis. The political impasse has raised fears of violence. One person had already been killed after a shooting at the Petroleum Ministry last Sunday. |
