The Cultural Triangle is the "northern half of the centre" of the island, crowded with heritage sites. The most significant former royal capitals - Anuradhapura in the northwest, Polonnaruwa in the northeast, Kandy in the south - mark the corners of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle.
Dambulla and Sigiriya are in the very centre.
The Central Highlands have Kandy in the north, Nuwara Eliya in the centre, Ella in the south. The centre of the highlands is tea plantation area. Pristine montane rain forests cover the northeast (Knuckles Range) and south (Horton Plains) and southwest (Peak Wilderness). These three regions form a World Heritage Site and, together with the Western Ghats in India, one of the world's 25 original biodiversity hotspots listed by Norman Myers.
The wide plains of the "Deep South" of Sri Lanka stretch from the highlands to the southern coast. Tissamaharama was the capital in ancient times. Many tourists prefer the soputhern beach resorts - such as Weligama, Tangalle, Hambantota, Kirinda - due to the dry climate, particularly during the summer months. The hinterland of the southern coast has some remnants of the ancient principality once called Rohana.
The southwest of the island is the lush green wet zone of the island, with famous beach resorts - such as Beruwela, Bentota, Hikkaduwa. The western plains to the north of Colombo and Negombo belongs to the intermediate zone. The latter region is the historical Dakkhinadesa, which was reigned by the crown prince of the Anuradhapura king. Outside the Cultural Triangle, Kurunegela District it the region richest in archaeological sites.
The Northern Province is a Tamil majority region. Accordingly, there are many more Hindu temples than in other parts of Sri Lanka. The most interesting district is Jaffna Peninsula. The Eastern Province is mixed Tamil and Muslim and Singhalese. Sri Lanka's most remote and lonesome places of interest are in the east. So if you hope to avoid the crowds, consider to travel to the Eastern Province.
