Not surprisingly, among Sri Lanka's hundreds of waterfalls some are more famous than others. However, there are varying reasons why they are better known among Sri Lankans or foreign guests. Dunhinda Ella is famous for its noise and its spray and for the nice short hike to reach the viewing platform. Ramboda Falls are known for their beauty, but the main reason why many foreign guests come to know them, that they are situated directly below the touristic main route in the highlands, from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, and can be seen from the terraces of a restaurant that is a good location for a break. Similarly, almost everybody driving from Ella to the national parks or beaches in the deep south of the island, travels along the waterfalls of Ravana Ella in Ella Gap. Lover's Leap is famous for its suicide and ghost story and frequented by travellers because of its close proximity to the town center of Nuwara Eliya. Quite the opposite reasons make Hunas Falls popular, this artificial waterfall belongs to the garden of Sri Lanka's much beloved honeymoon hotel. Bopath Ella is a little bit off the beaten tourist trek, however, many Sri Lankans visit the place for a weekend picnic, because this is the large waterfall which is closest to Colombo.
There are some famous waterfalls not listed in the image gallery below. The reason why images of them are missing on this page is simply, that they are already listed in our categories "high falls" or "wider falls". And admittedly, some waterfalls we list as "hidden falls" are not completely unknown to pocket guide tourism. But to have some of them mentioned among the famous waterfalls at least let's give a link in writing. Bambabarakanda waterfalls are most noteworthy, because they are by far the highest in Sri Lanka. Similarly, St. Clair's Fall is very famous, because it's a broad waterfall anf therefore nicknamed "Sri Lanka's Little Niagara". Not far from St. Clair's is Devon Falls, it's well known to many tourists, as it can be seen from the main road from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya via Hatton and a car park with observation platform is directly at the road. Aberdeen Falls is listed as hidden, because it's far away from sealed roads, but actually it's a well-known hiking destination from Ginigathhena Pass.
