The rich Kandyan food culture, to be savored in an authentic colonial ambiance
Sri Lanka's food culture is a blend of traditional flavours and colonial influences.
Already the Portuguese, who first arrived in 1505, introduced new ingredients and cooking techniques,
including the use of wheat products, which were unfamiliar to the locals.
European influences were further expanded by the Dutch and British,
the latter contributed buns and pastry and cakes to the evolution of Sri Lankan cuisine,
however, they were adapted to local tastes.
Empire Café offers a cozy setting where you can enjoy a traditional Ceylon tea or an Italian coffee.
The Queen’s Hotel, a colonial-era establishment once serving as governor’s residence, is one of the oldest hotels in Kandy and still retains much of its historic charm. Located by the picturesque Kandy Lake, it was became a favourite among British travellers in the 19th century and remains an iconic landmark of the city.
The Peradeniya Colonial Rest House, with its peaceful ambience and colonial architecture and cuisine
offers visitors a glimpse into the past while providing a relaxing dining experience today,
Historically, rest houses in Sri Lanka were designed to cater to travelers during the colonial era,
often offering a place to rest, enjoy meals, and experience the local culture.
