Local Food of Southern Sri Lanka - Tour Itinerary
Pick-up from your hotel in or near Galle or Hikkaduwa around 10:00 AM.
(The hotel can also be located in Unawatuna or Ginthota.) Families with children taking part in this special weekend days and bank holidays itinerary begin the tour in the morning at 10:00 AM with swimming with turtles at Hikkaduwa Beach. Afterward, we begin the village tour, driving along the river to visit a cinnamon garden, followed by a tea garden. Upon arrival at the teacher's house, you will be served freshly plucked low-grown green leaf tea or low-grow black tea from local production for tea tasting, along with snacks such as local short eats, spring rolls, traditional coconut cake, and sesame and jaggery sweets. The snacks served in the house are home-made and therefore less fatty than the usual Sri Lankan street food. Afterward, the village tour continues with visits to the local vegetable market and fish stalls, where you can select your own vegetables and fish for dinner. (Please note: On Poya Days, we cannot visit the fish market, so the fish will be purchased in advance.) The host, Niroshani, is a government school teacher who works at a college near her house. Niroshani has one daughter and one son, born in 2009 and 2011, respectively. A grandmother, over 80 years old, also lives in the house. Attached to the house is a small school offering private classes for underprivileged children, where they receive free education. Occasionally, you may meet the visiting children. On these weekends, weather permitting, the guests' children can engage in clay works, assisted by the host family's son and daughter. They can also participate in Carrom or Sri Lankan Dame games, with the rules explained by the host family's son and daughter. The guests' children will also learn to write their names in Sinhala characters at the attached school for private classes. The private garden spans about one hectare, where spices and tea are grown, offering a view of the River Gin, ideal for relaxing and enjoying a drink. Before dinner, if available, you can taste freshly obtained treacle toddy. Around sunset, engage in cooking in the spacious kitchen of the private house, either by watching a demonstration or participating in the cooking. Dinner will be served on the verandah with a view of the spice and tea garden. The dinner will consist of six different curries, including Baddegama Ambulthiyal Fish Curry, a local delicacy. The curries will be served with pink or red rice from their own garden, if available. (White rice can be provided upon request.) You will also taste Pol Roti, a Sri Lankan coconut bread, Papadam, and Pol Sambol. The dessert consists of local fresh fruits (pineapple, bananas, watermelon) along with buffalo curd from a neighbour's house, served with treacle honey. The price also includes one Sri Lanka Lion Beer per person, along with bottled water and ginger beer. The teacher's husband will demonstrate how to mix locally distilled coconut arrack with ginger beer. This private dinner food tour will last until around 9:00 or 10:00 PM.
