Difference between Gal Oya Morning and afternoon Boat Safaris
The morning and evening boat safaris on Lake Senanayake in Gal Oya National Park offer strikingly different wildlife encounters—each extraordinary in its own way. Yet the true magic lies in the contrast between them, something that must be felt to be fully understood. No description can quite capture the difference, but a few hints might just inspire you to experience it for yourself.
For bird lovers, the morning safari is a symphony of wings and songs as the lake awakens. But as the sun begins its descent, the shores come alive with land animals venturing out to drink. The true stars of the show, however, are the wild elephants—and their behavior shifts dramatically with the time of day.
At sunrise, herds gather at the water’s edge to graze and drink, often lingering in the shallows. Yet it’s in the golden hours of the afternoon that the real spectacle begins. Seeking relief from the heat, the elephants plunge into the lake for a cooling bath—sometimes even swimming to the islets, their trunks raised like snorkels. Witnessing these gentle giants glide through the water is nothing short of mesmerizing.
While Asian elephants are renowned swimmers (some even brave the open sea), spotting them swim across a lake to forested islets is an experience unique to Gal Oya. Will you be there to see it?

Payment PolicyDown Payment
For activities WITHOUT room reservations we require 20% of the payment on confirmation and the balance 7 days prior to Safari start. Or the full payment can be settled on confirmation. For boat safaris with room reservations (SL-GS-01A, SL-GS-01B, SL-GS-02A, SL-GS-02B) we require a 50% deposit upon confirmation, with the remaining 50% due no later than 31 days before the safari start date. Please note: This specifically means that for any booking made 31 days or fewer before the safari begins, full payment is required immediately upon confirmation. Payment Methods 1. Online payment using personal credit card (Visa/ Master): Log in details will be sent on confirmation with additional 4% card charge 2. Bank Transfer – For international or intranational bank transfer, the sender MUST bear all bank charges. E&OE Invoice Card Charges For online payment 4% will be charged additionally please let us know if you prefer to pay with your credit card. Cancellation Policy: For activities WITHOUT room reservation: - In case of cancelling after the confirmation reservation 20% will be charged – No Refund. - In case of cancelling less than 7 days or No Show 100% will be charged. For arrangements WITH room reservation: (SL-GS-01A, SL-GS-01B, SL-GS-02A, SL-GS-02B) - In case of cancelling after the confirmation reservation 50% will be charged – No Refund. - In case of cancelling less than 31 days or No Show 100% will be charged. Changing Tour • You can move an existing tour booking prior to 31 days before Safari Start as long as you pay the applicable additional charges.
