Nilaweli near Trincomalee is Sri Lanka‘s longest sandy beach offering tourist facilities. Accommodations range from simple guest house up to 3-star hotels. A 4-star hotel is available in Uppuweli. One favourite destination for excursions from Nilaweli Beach is the coral reef of Pigeon Island, which is one of Sri Lanka‘s two marine national parks. Pigeon Island is situated only 1 km off the coast at the northern end of Nilaweli Beach. To be honest: Though the coral reef is still rich in biodiversity, lots of the corals are damaged and would be disappointing for experienced coral reef explorers. Pigeon Island’s small and picturesque beach can be crowded with tourists at times. Almost unknown to tourists is one of the best examples of Sri Lanka’s typical ancient round temple architecture atop a hill at Thiriyai (Tiriyaya). It can be reached from Nilaweli Beach on a half-day excursion by car or tuktuk.
